John Rex Endowment Awards Grants for Injury Prevention and Nonprofit Capacity Building

The John Rex Endowment announces grant awards totaling more than $179,000 for injury prevention and nonprofit capacity building to support the work of Haven House Services and the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education.

Haven House Services will receive $108,873 to implement an evidence-based intervention model to reduce incidents of physical violence and the number of youth referred to the juvenile justice system in five participating Wake County middle schools. Grant funds will also support a new evaluation plan to improve the quality of data collected around program outcomes at the individual and school level.

“When communities engage in activities that are effective in preventing injury, we are better positioned to ensure the overall safety of children in Wake County,” said Kevin Cain, president and CEO of the John Rex Endowment. “Over the past three years, we have invested more than $2.5 million to prevent childhood injuries by supporting work at multiple levels, including community education, training and policy changes.”

Two nonprofit capacity grants have also been awarded. The Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education will receive $40,250, and Haven House Services will receive $30,320. Capacity building grants typically focus on strategic planning, process improvements, development or evaluation.

Since 2009, the John Rex Endowment has invested more than $2.1 million in nonprofit capacity building through 86 grants to help build the strength and sustainability of nonprofit organizations that support the physical, mental and emotional well-being of children.
