    Wake County Human Services recently received a GlaxoSmithKline Child Health Recognition Award for its Child Health and Development Program which is supported by a grant from the John Rex Endowment.   Wake County was one of only three counties in the state to receive an award in the Local Health Department category.

    The John Rex Endowment announces 13 new grants, totaling $123,559, which will be funded through an ongoing, long-term Capacity Building Initiative. The grants include capacity building implementation as well as organizational assessment planning projects which aim to enhance an organization’s ability to sustain programs and improve performance.

    The John Rex Endowment is pleased to release a Capacity Building Request for Proposals. This is the second funding opportunity made available through the Endowment’s ongoing Capacity Building Initiative. Grants funded through this initiative will allow organizations to undergo an assessment of current capacities and implement strategies to increase effectiveness and sustainability. See the RFP for the timeline.

    The John Rex Endowment is pleased to announce the Positive Youth Development Request for Proposals. Through this work, we seek to contribute to an environment in Wake County that supports, in all places and spaces, the healthy growth of our youth. A technical assistance call is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 7. For call instructions contact Kate Shirah, Kate@rexendowment.org. Letters of intent must be e-mailed to Kate Shirah by noon Friday, November 6, 2009.

    Raleigh Catholic Charities receives national recognition for The Raleigh Faith Community Support Circle Program for Homeless Families, which originated as a way to help people relocating to the Triangle after Hurricane Katrina.

    Positive Leadership & Youth Development
    In recent months, the John Rex Endowment was privileged to attend graduation ceremonies for participants from Planned Parenthood's Teens Taking Action, El Pueblo's Líderes de Salud and Wake County 4-H Extension's PODER. These local groups have a lot to celebrate!

    The John Rex Endowment will release a Positive Youth Development Request for Proposals in fall 2009. A timeline and details will be posted online. We will be accepting grant proposals which aim to improve the capacity of organizations and communities to address the health and well-being of youth in Wake County by using a positive youth development asset-based approach with an emphasis on connectedness, engagement and leadership development. Grants will be awarded in February 2010.
