Auditory Verbal Training for new Wake County program schools.

From: Auditory Learning Center, a research-education and therapy center serving the needs of "oral" deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

Contact: Mary Burch, Executive Director

Purpose: Catch up the deaf child who is behind academically. Prevent at-risk deaf children from being removed from mainstream classroom.

How: Training eight audiologists and speech pathologists who work with teachers at two new Wake County Public School System "program schools" for at-risk deaf children.

Outcome:
  1. Understand significance of critical period for development of auditory function.
  2. Identify specific auditory behaviors that occur in development of spoken language.
  3. Provide detailed account of relationship between normal development of audition, speech, language, cognition and communication.
  4. Predict levels of development in speech, language, cognition and communication in relation to level of auditory development.
  5. Write long and short-term goals for development of audition.
Cost/Term: $16,598 for one-year.
