Early Childhood Development Program: Ensuring Social Emotional and Behavioral Health

Purpose:
Increase the number of Wake County providers who provide effective treatment for young children with social, emotional and behavioral problems by training primary care providers and mental health providers who care for significant numbers of low-income children.
How:
- Recruit providers to participate in training.
- Train primary care physicians to recognize social, emotional and behavioral problems and provide intervention.
- Train mental health providers in evidence-based practice for intermediate and longer term intervention for social, emotional and behavioral problems.
- Train providers to use effective practice management strategies.
- Provide three phases of training designed to provide intense support early and decrease support over time.
Outcome:
- Increase number of low-income children who receive timely referrals for brief interventions and for intermediate or longer term interventions.
- Increase number of low-income children who secure care for social, emotional and behavioral problems.
- Increase perceived competence of providers to identify, treat, and refer children with social, emotional and behavioral needs.
- Reduce time between identification of developmental issues and interventions.
- Increase family satisfaction with care for children's social, emotional and behavioral health concerns.
- Increase provider satisfaction with practice management issues related to social, emotional care provision.
Cost/Term:
$771,301 for a three-year period.
