Healthy Athletes Program

Purpose:
Increase access to care and improve physical well-being of youth with intellectual disabilities.
How:
- Provide partial funding for Special Olympics participation for youth ages 6 to 18;
- Recruit new participants through the ARC and the Raleigh Parks & Recreation Department;
- Train recruits for eight weeks to qualify athletes for local competition.
Outcomes:
- Completed athlete medical forms for all new and selected existing athletes;
- Physical fitness evaluations and physical activity monitoring for athletes;
- 80% participation in Healthy Athletes screenings and identification of health concerns will be used in program evaluation.
Cost/Term:
$60,000 ($20,000 a year for three years).
