Preschool Vision Screening Study

Purpose:
Conduct scientific study of vision research photo screening technology to determine best practice for preschool children and expand number of Wake County children screened to the 10,000 targeted figure.
How:
- Screen 13,000 North Carolina preschool children (2,600 in Wake County).
- Refer all with vision problems or suspected problems to pediatric ophthalmologists specially trained for the study.
- Analyze screenings and follow up exams to show effectiveness of the technology.
- Add 4,200 preschoolers to 5,800 paid for with State funding.
Outcome:
- Results of study will be published and the CDC and Prevent Blindness America expect photo-screening camera will become Best Practice category.
- Addition Wake County children will receive preschool screenings -2,600 year one, 4,200 years two and three.
- Additional government funds will be made available to continue screenings.
Cost/Term:
$186,000 over three years.
