"WE CAN" Asthma Education Program

Purpose:
Improve the ability of children with asthma to manage their disease.
How:
- Work with public school nurses in 120 elementary and middle schools to identify and enroll children in WE CAN program.
- Expose 2400 children ages 7 - 15 to seven educational sessions using materials developed by national pediatric asthma experts.
- Engage parents in assessment and support of program.
- Provide children with peak flow meter, spacer and educational materials.
Outcomes:
- Improve student understanding of asthma management as measured by pre- and post test.
- Collect data on symptoms, activity limitations, and attack frequency among participating students.
- Record and evaluate school days missed, hospitalizations, and medication use.
- Measure parent evaluation and support of program.
Cost/Term:
$325,939 over two years.
