Wake to Wellness Grants Program

What: Improve fitness and nutrition in Wake County Public School System elementary schools

Purpose: Provide funding to Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) elementary schools to implement programs that help meet one or more nutrition and/or physical activity requirements of state, district, and local school wellness policies. Support public schools in their efforts to develop programs that create healthier school environments.

How: Funding approximately 15 WCPSS elementary schools who have written competitive proposals for programs that will help improve the school nutrition and fitness environment and meet wellness policy requirements. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention will be responsible for the administration of these grants funds, facilitating the application review and selection process and providing technical assistance for grantees. The Request for Applications will be released on January 8, 2007. Applications are due on February 16, 2007 and projects will begin on July 2, 2006.

Outcomes:
  1. Increase the number of physical activity opportunities during the school day
  2. Improve the nutrition quality of foods on the school campus
  3. Increase the number of schools using the coordinated school health model and involving parents and community partners
  4. Identify and document successful programs and tools that can be used in other WCPSS elementary schools to improve the school nutrition and fitness environment
Cost/Term:
  1. Total of $450,000 over three years
  2. 15 WCPSS elementary schools will be funded through a competitive application process
  3. Selected schools will receive $10,000 per year for three years ($30,000 per school)
