Need/Purpose:
27% of youth 12 - 17 are overweight and 18% at risk of becoming overweight with negative health consequences and influence on school performance and self-esteem.
- Create real world opportunities for young women to build lifelong skills and developmental assets through mentoring and year-round education experiences that increase physical and financial fitness.
How (activities):
- Weekly club meetings at ten sites, called 'Healthy Cents,' a curriculum developed by the American Association of University Women;
- A physical fitness component based on the 'Body Works' curriculum developed by the Office of Women's Health, US Department of Health and Human Services;
- Quarterly events for all club participants to expand positive peer network and be exposed to new activities;
- 'Camp Net Worth' week long residential camp at Peace College;
- 'Walk and Talk' one on one mentoring.
Outcomes:
- Increase participant frequency and duration of physical activity by 25%;
- Increase participant knowledge of benefits of saving and budgeting;
- 90% of participants will be able to state financial and academic goals;
- 50% of program participants will engage in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity a day;
- 85% of participants will be able to identify the keys to maintaining a healthy weight.
Cost/Term: $100,000 over two years. January 2008 - December 2009
