Girls on the Run Program Expansion
From:
Kelly Hurter, Executive Director
Girls on the Run Triangle
Need/Purpose:
Pre-teen girls often experience a lack of knowledge of self, a lack of connectedness, and a sense of powerlessness, growing up without the education, support and encouragement for physical activity, healthy eating and a respect for their bodies.
- Use a structured twelve week/24 lesson program of exercise and athletic participation as a therapeutic and preventative intervention for enhancing the physical, emotional and mental health of at risk adolescent females in selected communities.
How (activities):
- Provide Girls on the Run program participation to 140 girls through one existing Fuquay Varina site and two new sites;
- Work with local PTAs, schools and business community to build sustaining support for each local program;
- Revise and implement an improved program evaluation tool.
Outcomes:
- Active sites will develop support for ongoing operations;
- Participating girls will increase knowledge of and commitment to a physically, emotionally, and nutritionally healthy lifestyle and increase self-esteem as measured by pre and post participation tests and follow up surveys.
Cost/Term: $55,070 over three years. January 2008 - December 2010
