Healthy, Active Families Initiative - Creativity in Motion

From: Sally Edwards, President
Marbles Kids Museum (formerly Exploris and Playspace)

Need/Purpose: Sedentary lifestyles have produced a generation of overweight children: 17% ages 2 - 18 in Wake County. Decreasing screen time, increasing physical activity, and choosing healthy foods are keys to change.
  • Create a permanent outdoor 'natural learning' space at Marbles Kids Museum with exhibits and events that promote healthy food choices, and promote fitness and nutritional programs for children and their parents.
How (activities):
  1. Develop outdoor courtyard natural learning space and adventure wall with support of NCSU College of Design's Natural Learning Initiative;
  2. Integrate healthy food choice programming in all food-related exhibits and outdoor learning spaces in new museum;
  3. Create a new 'Family Fitness Challenge' program and annual signature events for family involvement;
  4. Disseminate results of activities above as best practices report to "Good To Grow' national consortium of Children's Museums.
Outcomes:
  1. Children will be engaged in active play and learning gardens;
  2. Children and parents will have hands-on learning experience to promote healthy nutrition;
  3. Families will be engaged in physical activity and motor skill development programming;
  4. Participation rates of all activities will be evaluated.
Cost/Term: $150,000 over three years. September 2007 - August 2010
