Healthy Athletes Program*

From: Special Olympics North Carolina

Purpose: Increase access to care and improve physical well-being of youth with intellectual disabilities.

How:

  1. Provide partial funding for Special Olympics participation for youth ages 6 to 18;
  2. Recruit new participants through the ARC and the Raleigh Parks & Recreation Department;
  3. Train recruits for eight weeks to qualify athletes for local competition.

Outcomes:

  1. Completed athlete medical forms for all new and selected existing athletes;
  2. Physical fitness evaluations and physical activity monitoring for athletes;
  3. 80% participation in Healthy Athletes screenings and identification of health concerns will be used in program evaluation.

Cost/Term: $60,000. January 2007-December 2009
