Líderes de Salud – Phase I

What: A project to develop promotores (lay health advisors) to work with community-based organizations in Wake County.

From: El Pueblo - a statewide organization, based in Raleigh, dedicated to strengthening the Latino community; active in health education and training, health screenings and publications.

Purpose: Promote improved health among Latino children in Wake County by involving families, community based organizations and health care organizations with lay health advisors who are recruited and trained to deliver health information and act as health advocates.

How:
  1. Develop the capacity of three local organizations to better serve health interests of Latino community.
  2. Empower Latino families to be more active and knowledgeable about the health of their children.
  3. Develop the capacity of existing health organizations to better serve the Latino population.
Outcome:
  1. 30 promotores will be trained and assessed each year to work with one of three community based organizations.
  2. 250 families will be served directly by a promotores each year.
  3. At least 500 children will be reached by the program in the first year, 1,000 children in year two and 1,500 in year three in health fairs and other events outside of family interactions.
  4. At least ten health agencies will receive direct assistance from Lideres de Salud each year.
Cost/Term: $430,824 for a three-year period. March 2003-June 2007
