Prevention Services for At-Risk Youth *

From: SouthLight - a private, non-profit agency that provides outpatient substance abuse program and prevention services for adolescents, youth, adults and families.

Purpose: Prevent youth who meet 'high-risk' criteria from developing substance abuse problems.

How:

  1. Expand evidenced based alcohol and drug prevention curriculum to Wake County youth, grades 6 - 12, in high-risk category (attending alternative schools, living in residential homes, suspended from school or referred by schools).
  2. Hire additional staff specialist to run programs.

Outcomes:

  1. Increase number of youth participating in "Project TND," "Project Alert," and "Guiding Good Choices" from 119 to 150.
  2. Provide comprehensive service to 25 at-risk youth in after school program.
  3. Increase parent involvement.
  4. Collect and evaluate pre and post program surveys on behavior and drug use of participants.

Cost/Term: $178,693 over three years. January 2007-December 2009
