Vision Screening Training Pilot Project*

Purpose: Refine, add and improve current vision screening practices for Medicaid children and Pre-K children in Wake County.

How:

  1. Work with an advisory committee to establish best overall evaluation practices.
  2. Revise current Kindergarten Health Assessment form.
  3. Assess current vision screening practices in Wake County.
  4. Establish new benchmarks for vision screening in pediatric offices.
  5. Provide in-office training on new benchmarks.

Outcome:

  1. Increased referral rates of children with vision problems.
  2. Timely treatment for vision problems reducing unnecessary vision loss.
  3. Decrease in number of incomplete Kindergarten Health Assessment forms.
  4. Recommendation to Medicaid Task Force on Vision for statewide application of benchmarks.

Cost/Term: $113,270 over two years. March 2005-February 2007
