Haven House Services Helps Youth Fight the Odds
The name of the game is gang prevention, and the boxing ring is where it all plays out. When youth step into the ring at Second Round Boxing, a division of Haven House Services, they come face to face with accountability, discipline and new opportunities. They build self-esteem and learn a whole new way of living. Second Round Boxing focuses on keeping at-risk youth off the streets with three therapeutic program levels, including a USA Boxing sanctioned competition team.
Local champion, Demetrious Jones, a 19-year-old who started boxing at age 13, is taking his lessons on the road as he represents Second Round Boxing and competes for a position on the US Olympic Boxing Team. Watch WRAL-TV news and learn more.
Approximately 350 Wake County youth are enrolled in Second Chance Boxing which is built on evidence-based positive youth development principles and uses boxing, weight training and other forms of exercise to teach at-risk youth teamwork, self-discipline, leadership, and other pro-socialization skills. Second Round Boxing collaborates with the Raleigh Police Department, Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department and other groups for gang intervention and prevention.
Haven House Services helps struggling young people and their families develop positive and successful relationships at home, at school, and in the community. The John Rex Endowment supports Haven House Services through grant funding for comprehensive positive youth development integration.
